Welcoming 24 New Volunteer Lay Chaplains

Bishop Anderson House and the wider Chicago area are now being served by 24 recent graduates of Volunteer Lay Chaplain Training. This cadre of volunteers hailed from multiple faith traditions and neighborhoods, but bonded together as one, learning the skills of active listening, the gift of presence, and how to navigate the medical landscape. Our newest alumni will be serving at Alexian Brothers Hospital, Northwest Community Hospital, and in their own congregations and communities.  We congratulate each graduate and wish them Godspeed as they bring the Care to Health Care. Perhaps you feel called to become a volunteer chaplain.  Enrollment for Spring 2016 is [...]

Bishop Anderson House and Rush University’s Department of Religion, Health, and Human Values (RHHV) are excited to announce the publication of “[The Pretty Good, Comprehensive-ish] Book of Prayer for Chaplain's [and Scriptures, too]”. Our Julian Intern, Cate Anthony, compiled and designed the book in collaboration with Zac Willette, Staff Chaplain at Rush University, and Gary Wilson, ACPE Supervisory Candidate at Rush. Bishop Anderson plans to publish the book for the use of our Volunteer Lay Chaplain’s Training Program graduates, while RHHV will provide the book for their CPE interns and residents. We at BAH recognize that our graduates often visit people [...]

Cherryl Holt, Associate for Chaplaincy

The Fall program will meet on Saturday mornings, 9 – 11 am, September 5 – December 5.  I facilitate several sessions and occasionally supervise some of the students in  their field placement. The Winter 2015 Lay Chaplain Class is just getting started!  Eleven students have [...]

Tender Loving Care

I heard the cries as soon as I entered the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  One of the harsh truths of a cold winter like this is that we see an increased number of children with burns from families using alternative heat sources to keep warm. I knew those cries were from a young child whose burn dressings were being changed. The two year old boy had been living in an illegal apartment in the city. Illegal, because it did not meet requirements for being rented out. But it was. A young mother was renting it with her 2 and 4 [...]
