Rush Announces New Mission Statement

Rush Hospital is striving to improve the health needs of the neighborhoods it serves, as made evident in their new mission statement: “improving the health of individuals and communities we serve." By expanding their vision outward towards the community Rush is expanding their impact. The life expectancy for west-side neighbors is less than 69 years, compared to 85 years only a few miles away in the Loop. From April 2016 to November 2016, Bishop Anderson House staff and trustees spent time considering our programs, priorities and resources, and how those factors all affect the impact we have. It was decided [...]

New Graduates of SCVT

Congratulations to our latest class of Spiritual Care Visitors, who completed their 10-week training on June 28.  Hosted by Greater St. John Bible Church in conjunction with Rush University Medical Center, the training was tailored to meet the needs of West Side pastors and their congregations. Graduates shared that the program has helped them deal with highly stressful situations in their family and community. Being able to act in a caring manner is helpful in times of illness, death and trauma, and our training informs students on a variety of situations they might encounter. The ALIVE! project of Rush UMC collaborated with Bishop [...]

Spiritual Care Week

Sharing her insights into spiritual resiliency and contemplation, The Rev. Lisa Senuta recently helped a group of care-givers develop some tools for strength in the face of caring for loved ones. A diverse class of lay chaplain training alums, professional chaplains, clergy and friends of BAH gathered in our cozy living room for 4 hours of peace and meditation. Lisa created a space for participants to step away from caregiving for self-care and silence. Taking the time to reconnect with nature and take time for self was a powerful theme of the day. The workshop was an ideal way to honor the theme [...]

Blessed by a “new” house!

Staff and guests alike are delighted at the new look of the BAH offices. Calmed by light blue walls and cushioned by newly reupholstered furnishings, the open spaces are welcoming and fresh. Each office has been reconfigured with more efficient desk space so that several staff members can work together, and morale and mood are buoyed by the modern look. We're hosting several Open Houses for our friends to view the new look, so watch for your invitation.

Renovation Project Underway

After nearly 20 years of residence in the Annex Building at Rush University, Bishop Anderson House has a renovation project underway. Over 1000 people pass through our doors each year and that takes a toll on the space.  In this month alone, we've been the site of 2 weekly AA meetings, a perinatal bereavement support group, 2 Rush CPE gatherings, the Alive! pastors' meetings, our own board of trustees' meeting...not to mention the meetings and use by our staff. As we live into our ministry of being a welcoming, comfortable and safe gathering place for pastoral care in the Illinois Medical District, we realized it [...]
